120 Young People in Papua are Empowered to Work in Corn Field

In order to improve the economy of the people of Papua and West Papua, around 120 young people who are members of the Inspirational Young Papua (PMI) are employed on corn fields in Sitori Village, East Kebar District, Tambrauw Regency, West Papua Province.

These young people get a salary of Rp. 100,000 and a meal allowance of Rp. 25,000 per day. According to the Coordinator of PMI Kebar Timur, Daud Amnan, in the future, more Papuans will be able to work.

"I am involved in the field, until now we have accommodated every tribal chief in this area to do work, both youth and old people. 120 people are already working," he said, Friday, September 23, 2022.

The program, which was initiated and initiated by President Joko Widodo and the Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), Budi Gunawan, was carried out on vacant land owned by residents entrusted to PMI to be managed. The area is 200 hectares, but currently there are 70 hectares of land planted with corn.

He said, BIN and PMI totality to improve the economy of the people of Papua and West Papua. Moreover, this is in line with Presidential Instruction Number 09 of 2020 concerning the Acceleration of Welfare in Papua and West Papua. He explained, thanks to BIN's support, PMI succeeded in cooperating with investors, namely PT Nuansa Lestari Sejahtera, to participate in managing the corn crop.

Daud said the company then gave Rp2 million per month to the land owner. The company also pays workers Rp. 125,000 per day. Later, the corn harvest will be shared between the company and the land owner.

"Here we see the economic impact is good for us. We are PMI assisted by BIN, we are moving for the welfare of the community," he said.

Meanwhile, PMI West Papua Coordinator, Simon Tabuni added, PMI has five main programs. One of them is corn farming in West Papua, especially in the East Kebar District.

Simon said that currently PMI, BIN, the community and investors are holding hands to encourage the development of corn, coffee and livestock in Tambrauw Regency. In the future, PMI will develop corn in Fakfak Regency and Teluk Bintuni Regency.

"We encourage the development of corn for West Papua as a national food center and open up many jobs, and our aspirations for a prosperous Papuan community through what they have are starting to come true," Simon added.

Previously reported, the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) encouraged the Keerom Regency DPRD, Papua Province and Bank Indonesia Papua Representatives to support the work program of young people who are members of the Inspirational Young Papua (PMI) in food security. This food security is in an effort to improve the welfare of the people in Papua.

The chairman of the Keerom Regency DPRD, Bambang Mujiono said his party would encourage various offices in the Keerom Regional Government to work together in the PMI work program. Bambang will also encourage the existence of a budget for PMI, including a budget for food security in the fields of plantations, fisheries and other work programs.

"Our support is in terms of budgeting and by mobilizing all sectors responsible for program implementation at PMI," said Bambang at a restaurant on Jl. Raya Abepura-Kotaraja Kota Baru, Wai Mhorock, Kec. Abepura, Jayapura City, Papua, Thursday, September 22, 2022.
