Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Affirms the Government's Commitment and Efforts to Realize a Peaceful Papua

Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security (Menkopolhukam) Mohammad Mahfud MD explained the government's various efforts in realizing a peaceful Papua. He explained that the government is continuously trying its best to maintain peace in Papua with various strategies for handling Papua that are continuously being carried out. One of them is through comprehensive welfare development.

Mahfud also said that the government is always making efforts to approach security without violence and without weapons.

"Our policy in Papua will not use violence, will not use violence at all. We will only take a legal approach," Mahfud said while appearing as a keynote speaker at a seminar held by Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Makassar, as reported by Antara, Monday. (22/8/2022).

"That (separatist group) we don't think of as a party facing us, but a criminal who is dealing with law enforcement officers. That's his position," he said.

Mahfud also explained that his party did not want innocent civilians to become victims if the government used an armed approach in Papua.

"They (separatists) when met, chased them, entered the villages and disguised themselves as civilians. Then the innocent people were taken as hostages. We said, TNI/Polri, no. stray to that person," he said.

Mahfud on the occasion also gave some descriptions of the problems faced by Papua. He said firmly that Papua is a legitimate part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. There is no negotiation of self-determination or tolerance for separatism.

This is in accordance with the constitutional basis, Papera 1969, UN Resolution No. 2504. Therefore, the government is involved in maintaining and creating peace for the Papuan people.

"Papua is a legitimate part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, there is no self-determination negotiation. Nothing, it's finished. The United Nations is finished, our constitution is finished," he said.

Meanwhile, Unhas Chancellor Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa said as a university, Unhas continued to maximize its role in realizing Indonesian peace. Unhas is also actively collaborating with Papua, to strengthen affirmations.

"We hope that through a science and technology approach, the Papuan people can prosper. In general, Papuan human resources are the key to people's welfare," he said.

"Therefore, Unhas is heavily involved in improving knowledge. Through various collaborations and available curricula. Unhas continues to be committed to encouraging the strengthening of human resources and Papuan community institutions and being involved in peace missions," he said.

Head of the Center for Peace, Conflict and Democracy (CPCD) Unhas Prof. Aries Tina Pulubuhu, explained that CPCD is a research and development center that was only formed two years ago. In general, this Research and Development Center is present as a manifestation of Unhas' commitment to take an active role in carrying out the tridharma.

"Through this seminar, we hope to produce an idea that can be a recommendation for the government to maintain the peace and welfare of the Papuan people," he said.
