Vice President (Wapres) Ma'ruf Amin emphasized that the government is committed to the leadership of the New Autonomous Region (DOB) prioritizing Papuan Indigenous People (OAP).
It is known that now three new autonomous regions in Papua have been approved, namely Central Papua Province, South Papua Province, and Papua Mountains Province.
"We are committed that those who will become leaders we prioritize are native Papuans," said the Vice President as quoted from his press statement, Friday (1/7/2022).
The vice president emphasized that the expansion in Papua was solely to provide better services to the community. Especially for the welfare of the Papuan people.
"The expansion is one of the efforts to provide services closer to the community. This means that by dividing this area, it is not far from one coordination with closer coordination to the community. The goal is to make it easier to serve the community in order to prosper," said the Vice President.
"If the service is too far away, like only one province, it is not served well," he added.
The vice president said the ratification of the Papua New Guinea was carried out by the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) after a Public Hearing Meeting (RDPU) was held with various parties, even Papuan leaders.
"Therefore, the DPR has carried out various assessments, has carried out the RDPU for Public Hearings, has conducted assessments in several areas in Papua and even many, the Governor himself has signed the agreement," he said.
Although, said the Vice President, there are still one or two parties who do not agree with the existence of this division in Papua. "That yes there are still one or two parties, I don't think it reflects the majority. That there is, yes."
"But according to the research results, the results of various studies in the region (Papua) show that they support the expansion. Because they really want to be served faster, better. Our efforts, the government will certainly carry out socialization, dialogue with them by providing them with a deeper understanding," said the Vice President.
