The Jayapura City Government immediately builds a water catchment pond to anticipate flooding

The City Government (Pemkot) of Jayapura, Papua, plans to build water infiltration ponds at several points in the area to anticipate flooding during the rainy season.

The acting Mayor of Jayapura, Frans Pekey, in a press release received by ANTARA in Jayapura, Friday, said that based on information from the Jayapura V Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics, the rainy season will occur from October 2022 to February 2023 in the region.

"So we will build water infiltration ponds at four points, namely Koya, SMA Negeri 4 Jayapura, Youtefa traditional market and Lantamal X Jayapura," he said.

According to Frans, the Lantamal X Jayapura area has prepared half a hectare of land for the construction of a water catchment pond.

"Meanwhile, in other areas, we will socialize which places are vacated to build water infiltration ponds," he said.

He explained that the plan is very important to anticipate the occurrence of flood disasters in Jayapura City, especially in locations that have been experiencing flooding during the rainy season.

He added that his party would reactivate the disaster task force (Satgas) which was formed in early 2022 to deal with floods and landslides in the region.

"We will also form a comprehensive task force in the field of tasks and services for controlling urban problems," he said again.

Thus, his party invites all residents of Jayapura City to be vigilant during the rainy season, especially for those who live in flood-prone areas.
