Yahukimo Regent Didimus Yahuli explained that the planned expansion or the establishment of a New Autonomous Region (DOB) in Papua Province would have a positive impact on accelerating development and prosperity in Papua.
On that occasion, Regent Didimus dismissed any concerns that thought the expansion would make indigenous Papuans extinct.
"Currently the death of Papuans is not due to division, but is caused by other factors, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), traffic accidents, drunkenness, tribal wars, and so on," said Regent Didimus in press statement, Saturday (11/6/2022).
This was conveyed by the Regent Didimus while attending a special meeting for the Acceleration of Welfare Development in accordance with the customary territory of Papua which took place at Suni Garden Lake Hotel and Resort Sentani, Jayapura Regency, Papua, Friday (10/6/2022).
Regent Didimus thought that the expansion would actually increase the number of people in an area. He took the example of the expansion in Yahukimo Regency which resulted in the population of the regency being more developed.
"We have to get rid of this paradigm of thinking, because Papuans don't die because of division," explained Regent Didimus.
He also said that the assumption that the division would result in the mobilization of many people from outside Papua, so that indigenous Papuans would be excluded was not true.
Regent Didimus explained, the facts show that when filling a position in the government structure, the expansion carried out by Papua previously had made indigenous Papuans occupy strategic positions in government organizations including the legislative body.
"Today the members of the Yahukimo Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) are 100 percent native Yahukimo, all members of the council in the Central Mountains are native Papuans," said Regent Didimus.
Looking at the existing reality, he said, it is impossible for the expansion to make indigenous Papuans marginalized.
"This actually makes the expansion an opportunity for the Papuan people to contribute more in various fields," he said.
Furthermore, according to him, this expansion is needed, one of which is because of the size of an area. His party mentioned an area in Papua which has a very wide area condition, so that the span of government control is too far.
On the other hand, he stressed, the expansion efforts must be accompanied by adequate financial support.
“Finance is nutrition for an area, including those that will be expanded. Thus, the expansion step can support the expansion and acceleration of development in an area," he explained.
Regent Didimus invited all parties to respond to the division in Papua more proportionally.
"This step is one that can be taken by continuing to build good communication, so that the purpose of this expansion can be understood by all parties," he said.
For information, the House of Representatives (DPR) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) has received a Presidential Letter (Surpres) regarding the Draft Law (RUU) regarding the formation of new autonomous regions in Papua.
The Surpres was received directly by the DPR on Sunday (15/5/2022), and will be brought to the DPR Plenary Session for follow-up.
In addition, in April 2022, the DPR has agreed on three bills related to the division of territory in Papua to become DPR initiative bills in the DPR Plenary Meeting.
Where the bill consists of a bill on the formation of the province of South Papua, a bill on the formation of the province of Central Papua, and a bill on the formation of the province of Papua in the Central Mountains.
