Building environmental education collaborations in the Fakfak conservation area

Environmental education is very important in today's life to educate the public in order to maintain the preservation of nature for the survival of life in the future.

Environmental education needs to be done for children from an early age to instill a sense of love for nature and care for environmental sustainability until they are adults.

Environmental education or PLH for early childhood in Fakfak Regency, West Papua Province is intensively carried out by the Indonesian Conservation Foundation.

Collaborating with the Teaching Fakfak Institute to encourage the realization of environmental education for early childhood in the conservation area of the Berau Bay coastal park and the Nusalasi-Van Den Bosch coastal park conservation area, which are fish saving areas for the future of the local area.

A member of Fakfak Mengajar, Kartika Dwi Cahyanti in Fakfak, Thursday, said that her party is encouraging environmental education in the conservation area of the Berau Bay and Nusalasi Bay coastal parks-Van Den Bosch by conducting trainers or training for teachers.

He said that the environmental education trainer program for elementary school teachers in the marine conservation area was in collaboration with the Indonesian Conservation Foundation.

According to him, the environmental education module or PLH was made by Indonesian Conservation and then handed over to Fakfak Mengajar to conduct trainers for elementary school teachers in the Fakfak marine conservation area so that the teacher can provide materials to educate students.

The PLH program is targeted at elementary school children from fourth grade to sixth grade. Especially for the villages in the conservation areas of the coastal parks of Berau Bay and Nusalasi Bay-Van Den Bosch, which have a small number of students in grades four to six, students from grades one to three are included in environmental education.

He said the PLH trainer program was not only conducted for elementary school teachers in the Fakfak marine conservation area, but also for community leaders and traditional leaders so that they help educate children.

"The program has been running and all elementary schools in the coastal water conservation area of Berau Bay and Nusalasi Bay-Van Den Bosch have been given PLH trainers," he said.

Must be protected and preserved

The Chairperson of the Indonesian Conservation Foundation for Environmental Education and Conservation Education, Fitriyanti Killian, who gave a separate statement, said that Fakfak Regency has two water conservation areas, namely the Berau Bay coastal park conservation area and the Nusalasi Bay coastal park conservation area-Van Den Bosch which are continuously maintained so that they are protected. can be enjoyed by future generations.

He said that in order for the two areas to be maintained, Indonesian Conservation collaborated with Fakfak Mengajar to educate the children in the two conservation areas to maintain the preservation of aquatic and forest ecosystems by conducting environmental education.

According to him, environmental education is being carried out for elementary school children starting from grade four to grade six in all villages within the two Fakfak marine conservation areas.

If there is a village with a small number of students in grades four to six, environmental education is carried out for all students from grades one to six. The learning pattern is carried out by learning while playing in the open using equipment that makes it easier for children to conserve and protect marine life and animals.

He said that the PLH activity contained one module containing nine materials that were used to educate children to understand the concept of Conservation. The module is named from the mountains to the sea where in the module there is material on protected animals on land to protected marine biota.

In addition, materials for preserving clean water and materials for where waste goes. Especially for the concept of where the garbage goes, the children are invited to play in the mountains to see the people in the mountains throwing garbage and then the garbage is washed away in the river flow to the sea to damage the coral reef ecosystem.

The module also tells the web of life in the sea and also the web of life in the mountains. There is also material about getting to know the world of forestry which tells about three types of forest, namely conservation forest, production forest, and protected forest as well as the nature reserve of Fakfak district.

He said that so far only parents have received a lot of training and education about the environment and conservation, while children rarely receive the same attention.

Therefore, he continued, environmental education and conservation are carried out for children so that they are well educated. Because children are very innocent and those who have been educated can immediately reprimand parents who do things that pollute the environment, such as throwing garbage anywhere.

He hopes that the environmental education module will be included in the local content curriculum in every elementary school in Fakfak Regency.

Support for environmental education for young people in Fakfak district is also encouraged by the Kitong Bisa Learning Center or KBLC with the "Kitong generation of conservation" movement.

Meeting with the KBLC in Fakfak Regency, Fuad Uswanas said that the 'kitong generation conservation' movement collaborated with the Indonesian Conservation Foundation to provide education to young people in Fakfak Regency in order to preserve nature.

According to him, the program that has been carried out is to provide environmental education materials for students on campus and also for elementary school children about the importance of preserving nature for sustainable life in the future.

"We will continue to campaign for the importance of protecting the environment, especially not throwing garbage anywhere and reducing the use of plastic waste for the younger generation in Fakfak district," he said.

He explained that conservation does not prohibit, but regulates sustainable use for survival in the future.

"One of the problems that needs serious attention from all parties in Fakfak Regency is the problem of plastic waste. I invite all people to let us reduce the use of plastic and not throw plastic waste into the sea which will have an impact on the damage to the coral reef ecosystem and the life around it," he said.
