Tabi Customary Council Forum Supports the Expansion of a New Province in Papua

The Tabi Customary Council Forum fully supports the central government's plan with the DPR RI towards implementing or establishing a New Autonomous Region (DOB) in Papua.

In the plan discussed by the government and the DPR RI, there will be three new provinces in Papua, namely South Papua Province, Central Papua Province and Central Highlands Papua Province.

This was confirmed in a meeting of the Tabi Territory Papuan Customary Council, at Yougwa Restaurant, East Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, recently.

This meeting was arranged by conducting joint discussions and also a statement of attitude as a form of responding to the aspirations of the indigenous peoples in the Tabi area.

“As a regional leader, I also want all people to be safe and prosperous. Therefore, the community must accept special autonomy," said Jayapura Regent Mathius Awoitauw, SE, M.Sc., to reporters who also witnessed the reading of the statement of position with the Tabi Customary Council Forum, last Wednesday, May 4, 2022.

Jayapura Regent Mathius Awoitauw, who is also the Chair of the Association of Forums with Regional Heads throughout Tanah Tabi, said that the first step that must be understood by all parties is the implementation of Special Autonomy (Otsus) which has been legalized by the central government.

If there are indigenous peoples in Papua who reject Otsus, then those who reject it are indigenous people who do not know customs.

The new DOB plan in Papua by the central government and the Indonesian House of Representatives, said Mathius, must be fully supported by all indigenous peoples. Because, only in that way (DOB), each region can run all the wheels of its government in its own way, with its own culture and culture. In fact, it can reach all isolated places.

"We in Tabi remain a Papuan province that oversees two traditional territories, namely, Tabi and Saireri. The most important thing here is that our visit to Papuaan should not be lost or eroded, because of the existence of a new autonomous region," he explained.

In line with this, the Coordinator of the Tribal Customary Council (DAS) of Jayapura Regency, Daniel Toto, emphasized that in distributing the Papua New Guinea, the central government must also understand the culture and customs of Papua.

There are five (5) customary areas currently recognized, namely Lapago, Meepago, Tabi, Saireri and Anim Ha. So these five traditional areas have their own culture and customs, and cannot be united in one customary area.

"For example, the Bintang Mountains Regency and Yalimo Regency, which are close to the Tabi area, cannot be united in one customary area," said Daniel Toto.

Meanwhile in the same place, the head of the Sarmi Regency Tribal Customary Council (DAS), Lukas Worone said that there was a lot of unclear information developing in the community about the name of the province, whether it was Papua province or Papua Tabi.

"However, in this meeting I will convey to all the people in Sarmi Regency, that we are still a Papua Province," he said.

“New autonomous regions or regional expansion are also important, so that all regions can determine their life choices and their government, can pay close attention to local communities. We have been waiting for this for a long time, so we continue to support the central government's plan for new autonomous regions in Papua," he concluded.

The contents of the statement of position from the Tabi Customary Council Forum, in addition to fully supporting the plan of the central government and the Indonesian House of Representatives to establish a new autonomous region in Papua, also supports the implementation of the VI AMAN Congress in Papua and the Tabi Customary Territory as the host and asks the Papuan Provincial and Central Government governments to appoint the character of the Regent/Mayor from the indigenous children of their respective tribal areas. For example, in the Tabi Customary Territory, there are five regions, namely, four regencies and one city where the characters must be Tabi natives.
