The plan to form a new autonomous region (DOB) or expansion in Papua is still a matter of debate among the public.
Support and rejection continue to roll over to the plan for the expansion of Papua. One of the supports came from a traditional leader in Biak Regency, Papua, Drs. Yulius Yunus Komisba.
According to Yulius, the division of a new autonomous region for Papua is a necessity for indigenous peoples, especially in Biak. Even the struggle for expansion has been carried out since 2004 so it should be realized.
"In the 1945 Constitution, it has been explained that our territory is divided into large and small areas. (Well) what is meant here is the new regional autonomy and Otsus itself," said the Biak tribal chief in a written statement, Monday 9 May 2022.
Expansion Opens Job Opportunities to Access to Education
Yulius assessed that the expansion would have an impact on the community. Apart from opening up job opportunities, it will also open up better access to education and health which will lead to an increase in the welfare of the Papuan people.
Yulius continued, the government should have realized the division in Papua. Likewise, more specifically with the Province of the North Papua Islands which will be domiciled in Biak.
“Of course, we welcome DOB well, if there are parties or groups who reject it, it is only a decoration of democracy. The point is that DOB and Otsus really need to provide space for movement that provides the welfare of the wider community as well as great opportunities for the management,” he said.
Yulius questioned the planned demonstration against the division and Special Autonomy on 10 May. He also asked the authorities to act decisively to arrest those who would stage a demonstration.
"Instead of bringing people who don't know anything, then brutal actions will occur which will affect the community later," said Yulius.
