Freeport Builds Science and Partnership Center on Uncen Campus

The existence of Cenderawasih University (UNCEN) as a center of excellence in Papua and the interconnectedness of needs between industry and universities have encouraged PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and UNCEN to collaborate.

Located in Hoel Rimba Papua, Tuesday 5 April 2022, PTFI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNCEN regarding the commitment to build the Freeport Indonesia Building for the Science and Partnership Center on the Cenderawasih University Campus.

Evidence of this commitment was realized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the construction of the building by the President Director, PTFI Tony Wenas and the Chancellor of UNCEN, DR. Apolo Safanpo, ST, MT witnessed by UNCEN Rectorate officials who were also present in Timika.

PTFI has collaborated with UNCEN since 1996 through various link and match programs which include research, internships, guest lectures, and others. This time PTFI and UNCEN entered a very important milestone, where PTFI will build a lecture building on the UNCEN campus which will later be used as a center for science and partnerships for students.

"Freeport hopes that this building can help UNCEN in preparing superior human resources and young generations in Papua," said Tony Wenas.

Meanwhile, the Chancellor of UNCEN, DR Apolo Safanpo, ST, MT believes that there is no successful company in the midst of a failed society. "Freeport's existence cannot be separated from Papua, and Freeport's commitment to grow and develop with the Papuan people needs to be appreciated," said Apolo.

UNCEN is the first higher education institution to be present in Papua and has produced thousands of graduates to date. Apolo appreciates PTFI's support and hopes that the presence of the Freport Indonesia Building for the Science and Partnership Center can support UNCEN in organizing UNCEN's Tridharma, namely Education, Research and Community Service," said Apolo.

The assistance for the construction of the Science Center Building by PTFI consists of 3 floors which will be built in the UNCEN campus area, Jayapura. It has a total building area of 2,765 m2 with a ground floor area of 630 m2, a 2nd floor area of 570 m2, a 3rd floor area of 870 m2, an auditorium area of 320 m2 and a rooftop floor area of 375 m2.

This building will later provide 18 classrooms, 1 lecturer room, and 1 auditorium with a capacity of 230 people, the rooftop floor which is used as an area for placing solar panels that can be used as learning materials for UNCEN students. This building was built with the concept of green building, carrying the principles of sustainability and environmental friendliness.
