PLN completed 11 large-scale electricity projects during the pandemic in Papua

PT PLN (Persero) continues to improve the reliability of electricity in Papua and Maluku by completing 11 electricity infrastructure developments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

General Manager of PLN Maluku and Papua Main Development Units (UIP) Reisal Rimtahi Hasoloan in Jayapura, Tuesday, said that most of the completed projects were network construction.

"Large-scale projects that we completed during the pandemic spread across the provinces of Papua, West Papua and Maluku, some of which were used to support the implementation of PON XX some time ago," he said.

According to Reisal, the completed projects are the 150 kilo Volt (kV) High Voltage Air Line (SUTT) with a length of 60.7 circuit kilometers (kms) and the Substation (GI) with a capacity of 420 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA).

This includes a Gas Engine Power Plant (PLTMG) with a total capacity of 28.9 Mega Watts (MW), of which 20 MW are located in Merauke, which is the cluster for organizing PON XX.

"With the increasing reliability of electricity in Papua and Maluku, of course we hope this can attract investors to invest in eastern Indonesia," he said.

He explained that his party is targeting the completion of three power plants, four SUTT and five substations by 2022 to maintain the positive trend of increasing the reliability of electricity infrastructure in eastern Indonesia.

"Next year, we set a target of adding 26 MW of generating capacity, 520 kms of SUTT, and 140 MVA substations in the provinces of Papua, Maluku and North Maluku," he said.

Previously, although there were several barriers to entry and exit in many districts and cities since the 2020 pandemic, this did not dampen the activity of electricity development in eastern Indonesia, which continued to increase above the national average.

Nationally, since 2017 the growth of installed power generation capacity has increased by 15 percent to 64.2 Giga Watt (GW).

The average national growth is still lower than the growth in installed capacity of power plants in eastern Indonesia, namely Maluku and Papua which grew by 36 percent and Nusa Tenggara which grew 48 percent, where for the Maluku and Papua regions alone until the end of this year had reached 1.3 GW.

Director of Mega Projects and New Renewable Energy at PLN Wiluyo Kusdwiharto said that the increase in electricity reliability in eastern Indonesia was accompanied by the aim of growing the level of the regional economy.

"PLN prioritizes electricity in eastern Indonesia to improve people's welfare, the operation of the high-voltage electricity system since 2015 in Jayapura and Ambon marks the revival of the spirit of energy justice in the foremost, outermost and disadvantaged (3T) areas," he said.
