There were 92 cases of violence perpetrated by armed criminal groups in Papua Province with 34 deaths from January to December this year. This number has increased dramatically when compared to 2020 which was only 49 cases.
This was conveyed by the Head of the Papua Regional Police, Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri, during a year-end reflection activity in Jayapura, Thursday (12/23/2021).
Mathius explained that there were 92 cases of armed criminal group (KKB) actions spread across five regencies that caused the security forces and residents to become victims. The five areas include Yahukimo, Bintang Mountains, Intan Jaya, Puncak, and Nduga.
The Papuan Police must be intense in establishing communication with a number of community leaders. This is for the sake of creating synergy to build the performance of the police.
The number of victims who died as a result of the KKB action were 4 members of the National Police, 11 members of the TNI, and 19 residents. The injured were 19 members of the TNI, 3 members of the Police, and 11 residents.

"There are also victims from the KKB who died as many as 12 people. Meanwhile, 27 members of the KKB who have surrendered to the Yapen Islands Police and declared themselves to be rejoining the Republic of Indonesia," said Mathius.
He said, the high number of KKB cases occurred in early 2021. In addition, the emergence of unexpected KKB actions in a number of areas that had been considered safe, such as Yahukimo Regency, and KKB actions in Kiwirok District, Bintang Mountains Regency.
“KKB action escalations often occur at the beginning of the year. Then their actions began to decline since May until now. This will be an evaluation for us to realize a peaceful Papua next year,” said Mathius.
He added that the Papuan Police would not carry out an operation to pursue KKB members next year. The Papuan Police will prioritize programs with a humanist approach by involving traditional and religious leaders, such as Si-Ipar (Pi Ajar Police), Matoa (Milenial Torang Maju), and TIFA (Torang Insan Faham Adat).
Head of the Papua Province Religious Harmony Forum, Lipiyus Biniluk.
The Papuan Police have inaugurated 1,999 members of the National Police who are native Papuans. They will serve as ambassadors for the National Police to carry out the mission of peaceful Papua in the assigned area.
"We have prepared 1,999 personnel for the Binmas Noken Program. We will work with community leaders to reduce conflict in Papua with a humanist program," he said.
The chairman of the Papua Province Religious Communication Forum, Lipiyus Biniluk, appreciated the success of the Papuan Police in implementing health protocols so that Covid-19 cases in Papua decreased drastically. In addition, the implementation of two national sports agendas, namely PON and Peparnas, went smoothly thanks to the extraordinary struggle of the security forces.
He argues, an independent team is needed that involves community and religious leaders. This team plays a role in evaluating the performance of Polri members in the community.
“Papua Police must be intense in establishing communication with a number of community leaders. This is for the sake of creating synergy to build police performance,” said Lipiyus.
