Papuan Indigenous Leaders & Youth Call for Fighting Corruption in Papua

A number of prominent figures and indigenous youths in Papua have highlighted the performance of the government in Papua Province, which is currently busy with the emergence of various alleged corruption cases.

Neles Monim, one of the traditional leaders from Jayapura Regency, said that allegations of corruption cases have long existed in Papua, especially in terms of the use and management of Otsus funds which so far have not been transparent, and have not even touched all levels of indigenous people in Papua.

He said, based on the depth of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), it was found that the waste and ineffectiveness of the special autonomy money was fantastic, even from various searches, it was found that there were mark ups or price inflations in the procurement of a number of public facilities in Papua which exceeded the normal rate.

"The National Police Intelligence and Security Agency (Baintelkam) in the 2021 Police Leadership Meeting (Rapim) made it clear that there were allegations of misappropriation of funds of more than Rp. 1.8 trillion. The money for the 'struggle' that should have been intended for the Papuan people, is actually stored deep in the pockets of the officials. Inevitably, the poverty rate from year to year, is reluctant to improve. What happens is that Papuans continue to be displaced from their land, and live in poverty in villages," said Neles Monim, Friday (12/17/2021).

He added that this situation was further exacerbated by the quality of the bureaucratic leadership and the chaotic government. Papua Governor Lukas Enembe, the person who is expected to fix and get rid of corrupt officials, does not move as his health condition declines, even the Governor of Papua is considered weak in dealing with a number of subordinates who often act as 'Minor Governors' who take opportunities for their personal interests.

“This is certainly a common concern, corruption is rampant, the governor's leadership is loosening and corrupt officials are mushrooming. Imagine, if the governor suddenly had to undergo treatment for a long period of time, then this would be used by a number of corrupt officials who would be more free to steal people's money, "said Neles Monim.

In this regard, Neles Monim invites all parties to unite in fighting the octopus of corruption in the Land of Papua, because corruption is an act that makes people suffer.

“The Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe, needs to immediately replace officials within the Papua Province government who are suspected of having misappropriated the Otsus budget. We are concerned about the government situation, the Papuan people support the Governor, but will not support it if the Governor cannot work optimally, because if the Governor does not work optimally, then the robbers of people's money will take over. In the end, it is the people who will return to bear the fate,” said Neles Monim.

Meanwhile, Eki Tokoro, one of the Papuan traditional youth leaders urged the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to immediately arrest the corruptors of the Special Autonomy funds, especially the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs has pointed out the potential for corruption in the use of Papua Special Autonomy funds. "The government has also opened up ulcers on 10 major corruption cases in Papua, as revealed by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, in mid-2021, that the alleged corruption of the Special Autonomy funds was already in the investigation stage. That what was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs was not just a promise, nor was it an effort to protect corruptors in Papua," he added.

He emphasized that currently, the 10 corruption cases have now become a wild ball that raises a myriad of questions for the Papuan people. For this reason, as the young generation of Papua, his party also asks the Governor of Papua, the Papuan DPR, and law enforcement officers in Papua, to join hands to eradicate corruption that is rooted, spreading massively in Papua. "Immediately, Papuan leaders will set a time limit for the completion of various alleged acts of corruption that have lasted for years, cannot be delayed any longer," he hoped.
