Freeport Repair Several MSC Facilities According to the PB PON XX Papua Guidelines

PT Freeport Indonesia in the near future will make some improvements and install branding at the Mimika Sport Complex (MSC) which is located on Jalan Poros Timika-SP5, Papua right in front of the Timika Community Partners Hospital (RSMM).

To prepare for the repairs, Friday (21/5/2021), the management of PT Freeport Indonesia, represented by Corporate Communication (Corpcorm) and Government Relations (Govrel), conducted a survey to MSC.

PTFI External & Media Relations Manager Kerry Yarangga explained, overall MSC is ready to be used for several sports competitions at PON this September.

However, there are several notes from PB PON regarding the improvement of supporting facilities and lighting in the MSC area.

"The notes have been submitted to Freeport in order to make improvements and complete them, because MSC is still being cared for by Freeport," he said.

During the repair, Freeport closed the sports facility for three months.

"Because there will be repairs or renovations, it is possible that for the next three months MSC will be closed to the public," he said.

Not only making improvements, Freeport will also install branding with the aim of conveying to the general public that the MSC was built by Freeport, as a form of support to the local government in the success of PON XX, especially in increasing achievements in the sports sector in Papua.

Meanwhile, regarding the transfer of MSC from PTFI to the Mimika Regency Government, Kerry said that this matter is still being discussed, whether in the future the implementation of PON XX has been fully handled by the regional government or not.

However, what is clear is that currently Freeport's focus is on preparing MSC for the implementation of the XX PON.

"The focus on MSC readiness in supporting PON XX is a concrete manifestation of Freeport in supporting the successful implementation of PON in Papua, especially in Mimika," he said.

The MSC was built by PT Freeport Indonesia at a cost of around US $ 33 million on an area of approximately 12.5 hectares ..

The facilities at MSC include an indoor stadium, a running track with a west and east stands, athletes' dormitories, and other supporting buildings.

The closed stadium is intended for badminton, basketball, volleyball and martial arts sports. The stadium is designed to accommodate around 5,000-5,500 spectators, including 75 VIP spectators, and is equipped with shopping areas and offices in it.

Meanwhile, the open stadium is equipped with international standard short and medium-distance running tracks as well as several other athletics such as javelin throwing, bullet shooting, high jump and long jump. The open stadium is equipped with two main stands in the west with a capacity of 2,200 spectators and the eastern part with a capacity of 1,300 spectators.

Meanwhile, the two male and female athletes' dormitories can accommodate 50 athletes and seven coaches each, with a total capacity of 100 athletes. The dormitory is also equipped with recreational facilities (fitness / gym, dining area, etc.) in the support dormitory.
