West Papua BPS Unveils Participation in the 2020 Population Census is only 5.06 Percent

The West Papua Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 5.06 percent of the population in West Papua Province, who have participated in the 2020 online population census.

This shows that there are still 94.94 percent of the population in West Papua who have not participated in the online population census.

This condition will be a challenge for West Papua BPS, carrying out a further population census, given the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic that has not ended.

Not only that, Maritje admitted, the budget is also a benchmark for BPS in carrying out a further population census. This is because most of the budget has been allocated for handling Covid-19. Thus, the population census method will be changed according to the available budget.

Regarding the change in conventional enumeration methods in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, West Papua BPS will use a questionnaire "shuttle" method to residents. Thus, Maritje is optimistic that she can maximize the available budget.

So we will drop a questionnaire to the respondent to fill in and submit it to the RT. Later the officers who come pick you up. That's the current method and it's more efficient, because we don't pay for the officers.

The continued population census is planned to take place in September 2020. Taking into account the geographical conditions of West Papua, Maritje admitted that she would coordinate with the central government to provide budget and time dispensations.
