Shallots Can Be a Commodity in West Papua Indonesia

Farmer groups in South Manokwari Regency (Mansel) believe they are able to make shallots as one of the leading commodities, even to meet market needs, in West Papua.
.
Ahmad Rudin said that if the local government is serious about developing the shallot commodity in Mansel, it is confident that it will be able to meet market needs, not only in the local area and even in all regencies in West Papua.
.
"If the local government supports and wants to make onion one of the leading commodities in Mansel, we are confident of being able and even able to meet the needs of this market in West Papua," he explained.
.
According to him, the soil characteristics in Oransbari Mansel District are very suitable if the onion commodity is planted. And this he has proven by repeatedly conducting trials of planting shallots in his land.
.
"I started planting shallots here, from 2016 until now. I tried it on 150 m2 land with 80 kg of seeds producing 350 kg. This means that with this size, the chances of success of shallot farming in Oransbari District are very high. Then the next experiment with seedlings 350 kg produces 2500 kg, "he said.
.
Another plus is that during planting onions in Oransbari, they have never encountered pests that often attack onion plants like in some areas outside Papua.
.
"Our main obstacle is seeds, because we have to bring seeds from outside West Papua such as from Java, Makassar and Bima," he said.
.
Nasarudin also added that in one year his party could plant shallots 3 times with a harvest period of 60-70 days. "In just 2 months or 60 to 70 days, the garlic can be sold on the market," he said.
.
He said his side had only been able to grow shallots in small quantities because of limited capital in buying seeds that were quite expensive. They once tried to use seeds from the onion that they planted, but the results achieved were not as optimal as those imported from outside.
.
Meanwhile, Oransbari District Transmigration Figure Tatang Chaeruddin, who was also present at the meeting, revealed that his party guaranteed the availability of land for planting shallots.
.
At present 10 hectares of land are available or more. It's just that he really hopes for the seriousness and support of the local government in developing the shallot commodity in Mansel. He also hopes that there will be equipment assistance, such as water pumping machines, cultivators and land tenants.
