The Kaimana Youth Coalition for Protecting the Climate cooperates with TNI and Polri soldiers to plant mangrove tree seedlings in the Air Tiba Krooy area, Kaimana as a form of concern for environmental sustainability.
Abdul Rahman Mustofa Werfete, coordinator of the Kaimana Youth Coalition in Kaimana, West Papua, said that the mangrove tree planting activity involved dozens of youths from various organizations.
In this activity, the Kaimana youth managed to plant as many as 115 mangrove trees in the Air Tiba Krooy area.
"We carried out this activity of planting mangrove tree seedlings because we were concerned with seeing the condition of the almost extinct mangrove forest in Kaimana Regency. The mangrove trees that used to thrive in Kaimana are now almost gone due to human activities. This is also a form of youth participation in building Kaimana," said Werfete.
According to him, the mangroves along the coast of Kaimana were almost extinct because the residents had deliberately cut them down to take the wood to be used as building materials.
Not only that, mangroves are also cut down to be used as firewood, so that over time the mangrove forests in Kaimana City and its surroundings run out.
"That's what makes the mangrove ecosystem in Kaimana now badly damaged. It takes care and attention from all parties to maintain and preserve the mangrove forest area because mangroves are very useful for preventing abrasion," said Werfete.
He said Kaimana residents need to be given continuous understanding of the benefits of maintaining and conserving mangrove forests that grow on the coast.
Apart from being a fortress to resist abrasion, mangroves are also a home for various marine biota and birds.
Mangrove forests that are well laid out can also provide additional economic benefits as a tourist attraction.
"Nowadays, many people are willing to spend so much money to visit mangrove forest tourism destinations. If mangrove forests are managed properly, it will bring in income for the community," he explained.
Kaimana Regency itself, which is famous for its various natural attractions as well as beach and sea tourism, is known to be one of the areas with the second largest stretch of mangrove forest in Papua.
The extent of the mangrove forest area in Kaimana has an impact on the high habitat of mangrove crabs, fish and shrimp in the area as an economic potential that can improve the welfare of the local population.
