The government approved the Draft Law or Bill on the Establishment of the Province of Southwest Papua which was an initiative of the DPR RI for further discussion.
The government also appreciates the submission of the DPR RI's right of initiative that proposed the bill. This was stated by the Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian during the Level I Working Meeting in the Commission II Meeting Room of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Monday, August 29, 2022.
"On behalf of the government, we agree to carry out further discussions together by taking into account the alignment of other relevant laws and regulations, both in the formal, technical, as well as material and substance aspects. Especially the crucial things that we need to pay attention to and also anticipate wisely," said Tito.
President Joko Widodo has assigned the Minister of Home Affairs along with the Minister of Finance, the Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, and the Menkumham to represent the government in the discussion of the bill. This is as stated in the Presidential Letter Number R-30/Pres/07/2022 dated July 20, 2022.
The retired general of the Indonesian National Police who once served as the Papuan Regional Police Chief emphasized that the discussion of this bill must guarantee and provide space for indigenous Papuans, both in political, government, economic, and socio-cultural activities.
This step is to accelerate development, improve public services, improve people's welfare, and raise the dignity of indigenous Papuans. Tito hopes that the establishment of the Southwest Papua Province will accelerate development in the area.
“The expansion in Papua refers to Article 76 of Law Number 2 of 2021 concerning the Second Amendment to Law Number 21 of 2001 concerning Special Autonomy for the Papua Province. The regulation is an important pillar in formulating policies for accelerating welfare development in Papua, one of which is through regional expansion, "said Tito.
Previously, the government and the Indonesian House of Representatives had enacted three laws (Laws) on the formation of a new province in Papua on July 25, 2022. The three regulations include Law Number 14 of 2022 concerning the Establishment of the Province of South Papua.
Then, Law Number 15 of 2022 concerning the Establishment of the Province of Central Papua, and Law Number 16 of 2022 concerning the Establishment of the Province of Papua Mountains.
