Formation of new autonomous regions in response to Papua's needs

Political observer at Al Azhar University Jakarta, Sunardi Panjaitan, said he was optimistic that the establishment of a New Autonomous Region (DOB) in Papua would answer the needs of the community and equitable development in Cenderawasih Earth.

“Papua is quite large, infrastructure access to the districts is still very limited, not to mention to other areas it is very worrying. So, the presence of new autonomous regions can strengthen infrastructure development in each new autonomous region," said Sunardi in Jakarta, Monday.

The man who has lived in Wamena District, Jayawijaya Regency for 3 months added that the presence of new autonomous regions can also improve the quality of education for the Papuan people.

However, according to him, from a security perspective, this can be a problem because the local community itself is still concerned that the formation of a new autonomous region will strengthen the military presence in Papua.

"There will be at least three new regional police, at least there will be three (new) kodams because if they were put together at the Cenderawasih Kodam it would be too difficult," explained Sunardi.

According to Sunardi, so far some local residents and several community leaders are worried about the increase in military power in Papua.

That is why, according to Sunardi, welfare and security are two aspects that must be handled differently in Papua.

"So the formation of new autonomous regions is positive for development, but the government must think about its security approach so that it does not cause social impacts," said Sunardi.

Sunardi encourages the use of a persuasive and slow approach to avoid social impacts and ripples in the local community.
