The pretext for the Acceleration and Equity of Development, the Chairperson of the DPR Supports the Expansion of Provinces in Papua

The Legislative Body has approved the formation of three draft laws regarding a new province in the Papua region in a decision-making plenary meeting. The move to create a new province in Papua has the support of the Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani.

The three new provinces that are planned to be formed are South Papua Province, Central Papua Province, and Central Highlands Papua Province.

Puan reasoned that the support for the expansion of the province was for the sake of accelerating and equitable development in Papua.

"The addition of a province in eastern Indonesia is intended to accelerate equitable development in Papua and to serve the Papuan people better," said Puan in her statement, Friday (8/4/2022).

In addition, according to Puan, regional expansion in Papua is also aimed at improving public services and the welfare of the Papuan people. He hopes that the addition of provinces can further advance Papua.

"The bill that regulates the division of the three new regions is also an effort to raise the dignity of the Papuan people," said Puan.

Meanwhile, regarding the three bills regarding the division of provisions, Puan ensured that the regulations would still be aligned with the Papua Special Autonomy Law (Otsus).

"In the discussion of this bill later in order to pay attention to the aspirations and needs of the Papuan people," said Puan.

It is known that the three new provinces in Papua will each cover a number of districts that are currently still included in Papua Province.

South Papua Province (Ha Anim) will make Merauke the capital, then the capital of Central Papua Province (Meepago) will be in Timika, and the capital of Central Highlands Papua Province (Lapago) will be Wamena.
