The Bill on the Expansion of Papua Is Passed, Indonesia Has 37 Provinces



The DPR has made a decision regarding the Bill for 3 New Provinces in Papua. The decision-making took place in a plenary meeting, Tuesday (12/4/2022).

For your information, the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the DPR RI approved a draft law (RUU) that regulates 3 new provinces in Indonesia so that there will be 37 provinces in the country as a whole.

The plan for the addition of this province is regulated in the Draft Law (RUU) concerning the Province of South Papua, Central Papua Province, and the Province of Papua Central Mountains.
 
According to Bisnis monitoring, in the plenary meeting, the majority of the factions in Baleg agreed to the bill on the three provinces.
 
"After we have listened to the opinions of all factions and agreed. Can the results of the harmonization of the bill on the Provinces of South Papua, Central Papua and Papua Central Mountains be approved?" asked the Deputy Chairman of the DPR Baleg Achmad Baidowi in a meeting at the parliament complex, quoted through the DPR RI Baleg Youtube, Thursday (7/4/2022).

"Agreed," answered the plenary meeting participants.
 
Furthermore, in the future a number of districts will be included in the three new provinces.
 
Meanwhile, there are three new provinces in Papua, namely South Papua Province, Central Papua Province, and Central Highlands Papua Province. The names of the 3 candidates for the new provinces in Papua were proposed and adapted to the customary territory.

South Papua Province will be named Anim Ha with the capital city Merauke and the scope of the area of Merauke Regency, Mappi Regency, Asmat Regency, and Boven Digoel Regency

Then, Central Papua Province will be called Meepago with the capital city of Timika and the scope of the territory of Mimika Regency, Paniai Regency, Dogiyai Regency, Deyiai Regency, Intan Jaya Regency, and Puncak Regency.

Meanwhile, Central Mountains Papua Province will be named Lapago with the capital city of Wamena and the scope of the area is Jayawijaya Regency, Puncak Jaya Regency, Lanny Jaya Regency, Central Mamberamo Regency, Nduga Regency, Tolikara Regency, Yahukimo Regency, and Yalimo Regency.

Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the DPR Syamsurizal hopes that the bill on the new province in Papua can have a good impact on people's lives in Papua.

"Hopefully this will be our act of worship and our service to the nation and state, especially to our nation or tribe in Papua. Hopefully they can live together side by side with all of us in Indonesia," said Syamsurizal.

Meanwhile, member of the DPR from the PDI-P faction, Selly Andrianygantina, also noted that the implementation of the law must refer to the constitution and laws related to Papua's Special Autonomy.

"The PDI-P faction is of the view that the content of the Bill on the Province of South Papua, Central Papua, and Papua Province of the Central Mountains should remain within the implementation corridor in Article 18 paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution with reference to the material content of the Law on Special Autonomy for Papua which has been discussed in the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. previous meetings," said Selly.

In addition, the PDIP faction also emphasized that the division of the three provinces in Papua should pay attention to the aspirations of the local community. This is intended to accelerate equitable development, improve public services and public welfare, as well as elevate the dignity of the Papuan people.
