Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD claimed that Papua was the province that received the most special attention from President Joko Widodo. Mahfud said this after accompanying President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to receive the delegation from the Papuan People's Assembly and the West Papuan People's Assembly at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday (25/4/2022).
"Papua is indeed a part that is of special concern to the President. For other provinces, the President (visit) maybe only two or three times, but he has been to Papua fourteen times," Mahfud said while giving a press statement as witnessed virtually through the Secretariat's YouTube account. President, Monday (25/4/2022).
Mahfud explained that the President's meeting with the Papuan People's Assembly (MRP) and West Papua went well and no new decisions were needed. The President also expressed his readiness to visit the MRP office while he was in Papua.
"Later, when he goes to the provincial capital, (the President) will visit the MRP and West Papua offices," said Mahfud.
The meeting discussed the aspirations of the MRP regarding Law Number 21 of 2001 concerning Special Autonomy (Otsus) for the Papua Province. Previously, the DPR RI through a plenary session on July 17, 2021, approved the revision of the Special Autonomy Law by fixing seven crucial points in 20 articles.
Mahfud conveyed that the Special Autonomy Law had already been implemented and was ratified, but a judicial review was still underway at the Constitutional Court. "We respect the legal process and we will continue to follow its development and of course it will eventually lead to a verdict from the Constitutional Court later," said the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.
