Support the expansion of Papua into 6 provinces

Former Indonesian Ambassador to Australia Imron Cotan supports the plan for the expansion of the province in Papua as an effort to equalize development which has not materialized due to the size of the area.

Imron hopes that the expansion of the Papua province will soon be realized because it is a concrete solution to achieve equitable development in Papua, both in terms of health, education, infrastructure, and other fields.

"The expansion aims to improve welfare, not to divide the people," said Imron when he was a resource person for the Jabodetabek Papuan Student Gathering at RM Gubug Udang Cibubur, East Jakarta, Wednesday (23/2/2022).

It is planned that the province in Papua will be divided into six administrative regions. The six provinces proposed by the central government include Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, Central Mountains, South Papua, and Papua Tabi Saireri.

Imron emphasized that the formation of new autonomous regions or new autonomous regions is an opportunity to open up new jobs, as well as shorten the public administration space for the Papuan people.

"So that people get better and faster services," said Imron in front of dozens of Papuan Orang Asli (OAP) students.

Imron also encourages young Papuan people to always be eager to gain knowledge to help Papua become more advanced.

"The OAP community must have a brighter future by going to school," said Imron.

Imron also promised to help OAP students to obtain scholarships from the Ministry of Education and Culture.

"President Jokowi also provides job opportunities for OAP graduates in Jabodetabek to be employed in BUMN and the private sector," said Imron.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Human Studies Institute (HSI) Rasminto is of the view that in developing Papua, it is appropriate to prioritize a humanist approach through social culture.

Because according to him, elements of adat in culture cannot be judged by views that come from other cultures, but from a value system that must exist within itself.

"Adat is personal, meaning that a certain community's custom can only be understood by getting closer to the cultural values that exist in the community that owns the custom," said Rasminto.

Rasminto continued, human development places humans as the ultimate goal of development with an ethnic and cultural-based approach (ethno-development) Papua.

"Because of the ethnic and cultural diversity that each region has in Papua, they have different needs," said Rasminto.

Rasminto emphasized that this workshop was a moment to place Papua's development in a humanistic way.
