Exterminate Papuan Separatists, TNI/Polri No Need To Hesitate

International law expert, Hikmahanto Juwana, stated that in defending the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the TNI's decisive action against Papuan separatists was in accordance with and supported by regulations and laws, so there was no need to hesitate to act on the ground.

According to him, the TNI as a state defense tool in dealing with separatists can not only use the TNI Law but can also use the Terrorism Law, because separatist groups do not only target TNI and Polri personnel but also civilians and other public facilities.

"There should be no doubt because it has been supported according to regulations and laws," said Hikmahanto, in a discussion in Jakarta, Thursday, March 5, 2021.

Furthermore, the Legal Expert and Professor of International Law at the University of Indonesia said that regarding the decisive action taken would pose a risk of facing national and international exposure, faced with human rights issues.

"Institutions or institutions supporting the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia need not be afraid of external criticism, especially if the criticism comes from separatist groups," he stressed.

Another speaker in the discussion, Adji Samekto, said the same thing. He said historically the Papuan separatist movement wanted to break away from Indonesian sovereignty, so that the step of presenting the TNI as an enforcer of state sovereignty in the settlement in Papua was appropriate, because it was the result of an analysis of the facts and intentions of the problem and had been mutually agreed upon between the executive and legislature.

"Another appropriate step for the settlement is through the Otsus approach in Papua," said Adji Samekto.
