Scenarios for the Implementation of the Papua PON If Covid-19 Cases Are Still High

The XX National Sports Week or PON Papua 2021 has the potential to be held without spectators. Chairman of the Central KONI, Marciano Norman, this scenario will be taken if the national Covid-19 case is not under control approaching the day the XX Papua PON will be held on 2-15 October.

"We are carrying out PON during the Covid-19 pandemic, so the possibility of implementing this PON itself is still several alternatives," said Marciano Norman in a virtual press conference, Thursday, August 12, 2021.

If the Covid-19 situation is under control, Marciano opens the opportunity for the PON Papua match to be attended by spectators. "This still requires other considerations, it could be with 50 percent of the audience or even 20 percent of the audience," said Marciano.

"But if it is not possible, this PON will run without spectators."

Marciano emphasized that health issues are a top priority during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

"Health issues, during this Covid-19 pandemic, health issues are the main concern for all of us," he said.

As directed by President Joko Widodo, athletes and officials from each provincial contingent participating in the XX Papua PON must have been vaccinated.

"Similarly, the President's request that people in Papua, who live around the venue where the matches will be held, are also expected to be vaccinated," said Marciano.

So far, 40 percent of residents living around the match venues have received injections of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The PON Grand Committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is targeting 70 percent of residents living around the match venue to be vaccinated before the XX Papua PON begins.

"We take advantage of the time we have to catch up, until the time comes, with the support of the Ministry of Health, at least we have reached the figure of 70 percent who are vaccinated," said Marciano Norman.
