4 Regents Declared the Establishment of South Papua Province

Four regents in regencies located in southern Papua officially declared the establishment of the South Papua Province in Merauke Regency today, Tuesday (15/6).

The four regents who declared the expansion of the South Papua Province were the Regent of Merauke, the Regent of Asmat, the Regent of Boven Digoel and the Regent of Mappi.

"That's right. Earlier we inaugurated the Sekber for the division team of South Papua Province, which consists of a combination of four districts. And at the same time we declared that we want to fight for the division of the province of South Papua," said Deputy Regent of Asmat and Chairman of the expansion team for South Papua Province, Thomas Eppe Safanpo

Thomas said the declaration was also attended by all deputy regents, chairman and members of the DPRD as well as community leaders in the four regions.

He said the declaration of the expansion of the South Papua Province was also marked by the act of collecting signatures on white cloths.

"This is a statement of support from the leaders, the regent, the leaders of the DPRD, community leaders, religious leaders, traditional leaders and youth in the four districts," he said.

Furthermore, Thomas claimed that since 2019 he had an audience with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Commission II of the DPR is planning the establishment of the Province of South Papua. In fact, he said that on June 7, 2021, his party had been invited to attend a Hearing Meeting with Commission II of the DPR.

After the declaration, Thomas said his party was waiting until the ratification of the Special Autonomy Bill in the DPR officially became a law. He predicts that the bill will be passed on the second Sunday of July 2021.

"Later on, we will go to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Indonesian House of Representatives to convey the aspirations for the expansion of Papua, including the formation of the South Papua Province. We convey a statement of position and urge to accelerate the expansion of Papua," he said

It is known that the central government has not yet decided on the existence of division in Papua Province.

However, the draft Revision of Law (RUU) No. 21/2001 on Special Autonomy for Papua gives the central government great authority to expand and create new autonomous or administrative regions.
