Preventing Food Crisis in Jayawijaya, Deputy Regent Invites the Community to Back to Gardening

Deputy Regent (Deputy) Jayawijaya, Papua Province Marthin Yogobi invites the public to prevent a crisis or shortage of food that is predicted to arise due to the outbreak of the Corona virus (COVID-19).

Marthin Yogobi in Wamena, Capital City of Jayawijaya Regency, said that community dependence on rice is very high, while rice farmers from producing regions do not work optimally due to corona.

"It is predicted that we could lack food so specifically in the Lapago adat area we ask all regional heads and volunteers from Covid to invite the community to return to gardening according to the local wisdom culture here," he said.

The Chairman of the Lapago COVID-19 Handling Team said that there was a need for socialization to the community to want to farm because dependence on rice that was still felt in the community, could make them reluctant to grow local food in the form of tubers.

"Now the dependence on rice is not only felt by the community, to the extent that wam (pigs) also do not want to eat local food such as hiperes (sweet potatoes, pigs only want to eat rice and this is a problem," he said.

Before the emergence of the corona virus in this area, the regent and deputy regent of Jayawijaya were among the officials who routinely visited the communities of each district and provided farming equipment such as machetes, shovels, crowbars and motivating gardening communities.

Jayawijaya is one of the best areas for the production of tubers and vegetables because it does not use chemical fertilizers, but vegetable production cannot meet market demand so the government is bringing in from outside Jayawijaya.

"For local vegetables it is not able to meet demand, we are still supplied from the outside. But (local vegetables) are always available," said Jayawijaya Disnakerindag Officer Arisman Chaniago.
