PON Must be able to Optimize Tourism Potential in Papua

The National Sports Week (PON) to be held in Papua received mixed responses from the Papuan people. Maximus Tipagau, one of the social entrepreneurs who are also leaders of the Papuan community, hopes that the holding of this PON can have an immediate economic effect on the Papuan people themselves.
.
"The development of supporting infrastructure for PON activities carried out in Papua is quite good, but its function must also be considered after the PON ends," he said. According to Maximus, do not let the post-PON buildings be abandoned because they are no longer functioning.
.
He further hoped that the implementation of PON in Papua could later become one of the strengths to elevate culture and tourism in the easternmost province of Indonesia.
.
"Because tourists who come not only want to watch sports matches, they can also want to enjoy the existing tourism and culinary variety," explained Maximus. "The government must start to develop tourist destinations in Papua to welcome the implementation of this PON."
.
According to Maximus the existing budget can also be devoted to the development of human resources in Papua to be more aware of tourism and ready to face tourists who come during the implementation of the Papua PON. "For example, by generating souvenir business in the community," he said.
.
"The approach taken must be a cultural and tourism approach," he said. So far, continued Maximus, the government has always taken a political approach in Papua. "This then causes conflict."
.
Even so Maximus hopes that the implementation of Papua 2020 PON will run more smoothly and conducive. "We Papuans are very supportive of these activities because we directly introduce more potential of Papua to the outside community," he said.
