Hydroponic training for indigenous people in Wembi village

To strengthen the existence of indigenous peoples as a form of recognition and protection to manage natural resources for economic improvement, the Papuan Independent People Coordination (Kipra) conducted training in planting with media or hydroponics for women in Wembi Village, Manem District, Keerom District.
.
The training was held for two days, 12-13 February 2020 in the yard of the house of the Head of Wembi Village, Blasius Pien, and began with a question and answer session, which was attended by about 20 mothers from RT 01 and RT 02.
.
Participants on the first day fervently listened to the facilitator's explanation of basic hydroponic knowledge, the introduction of planting media and hydroponic systems, and plant nutrition.
.
After that they did the practice of sowing hydroponic seeds, making simple systems, dissolving nutrients and making hydroponic installations.
.
Planting with hydroponic techniques is considered environmentally friendly because it utilizes used items such as plastic bottles, plastic cups and jerry cans. Types of vegetable plants that can be grown by hydroponics are also diverse, ranging from kale, spinach, mustard greens, celery, and basil.
.
Besides hydroponic system vegetable plants as well as ornamental plants around the house. That way, in addition to being beneficial for consumption, hydroponic vegetables can be used as an alternative to ornamental plants.
.
According to him, not only easy maintenance, but also the age of harvesting hydroponic vegetables only takes about 30-40 days to be harvested or consumed.
.
One of the participants, Mama Yohana Mekawa, admitted that she only got knowledge about hydroponics. According to Mekawa, the hydroponic business is quite simple because it uses simple media and is made in the yard or around the house, so that it is easily controlled.
.
"Easy maintenance and the results we can sell. If we sell it ourselves the results will be good, "he said. Broadly speaking, this hydroponic planting is able to produce healthy plants, not requiring as much water as other plants.

"In the future, hopefully it can be developed in the yard, in the gardens. This is practical and brings mothers closer to production, "said Irianto Yakobus, the person in charge of the Papua Kipra Foundation.
.
Head of Wembi Village, Blasius Pien (57) said that this training really helped the community to develop agricultural businesses. However, he hopes that the mothers will continue to be active, participate in training continuously and require assistance from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in the District of Keerom.
