Action to Plant 1000 Mangrove Trees

The Indonesian Association of Geological Experts (IAGI) in Papua collaborated with the Jayapura Mangrove Community Community to plant 1,000 mangrove seedlings in the Mendug Coast area, South Jayapura District, Jayapura City, Saturday, 8 February 2020.

Before carrying out the tree planting action, dozens of IAGI Papua members consisting of a combination of students in the city of Jayapura and members of the Jayapura Mangrove community cleared the Mendug area from scattered plastic rubbish.

Chairman of IAGI Papua, Robert Awi said, this planting action was part of a series of activities that have been carried out by IAGI Papua.

"This is a series of our activities throughout 2020 and there will be several other activities in the form of seminars that we will do in the near future. Hopefully what we do today can be useful for the future, "said Robert.

While the Chairman of the Jayapura Mangrove Community, Gamel said, the Mendug Coast area became a place that was being sought to be able to return to normal after 2012 and then the mangrove trees were cleared.

"We think what IAGI has done is right, which started the 2020 program by planting. The Mangrove House started on January 1 by cleaning up the rubbish left over from the New Year's Eve and from planting 1000 seedlings at least, there are many messages that can be picked up by younger students, "Gamel explained.

Gamel hopes that this kind of movement will not only become a ceremony, but truly a joint commitment to save the forest and the environment.
