The Papua Provincial Government (Pemprov) through the local Agriculture and Food Service is preparing three horticultural areas which are the focus of developing agricultural commodities for the Papua region.
Salomon Telenggen, acting head of the Papua Agriculture Service, told Antara in Jayapura on Monday that the three areas were Keerom Regency and Jayapura City and Regency.
"The three regions still have land and market share is also good," he said.
According to Salomon, with the area being a horticultural area, the main province will also have superior commodities after the inauguration of the three New Autonomous Regions (DOB).
"Before the new autonomous regions were formed, we had paddy fields in Merauke Regency. For this reason, Papua Province will now create Keerom Regency to replace paddy fields, so we need 200 hectares of new land," he said.
He explained the formation of the three new autonomous regions was a challenge but also a potential for the nine regencies in the Onduk province so that in the future it is hoped that they can become a buffer for the three provinces.
Meanwhile Deputy Regent of Keerom Wahfir Kosasih said that his party would support the program from the Papua Provincial Government because there was still a lot of empty land that could be utilized by farmers.
"We are very happy that the farmers will be more prosperous and added with the presence of this new province so that it is hoped that in the future Keerom Regency will be able to supply these commodities," he said.
He explained that this collaboration was a good step from the government for farmers, because in Keerom Regency, 80 percent of the people are engaged in the agricultural sector.
