The West Papuan government supports incoming foreign investment in Sorong Regency

The West Papua Provincial Government provides full support for the entry of investment from Great United Petroleum Holding Co. Ltd, a company from China, in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of Sorong Regency to encourage economic growth in the area.

Acting Governor of West Papua Paul Waterpauw in Manokwari, Wednesday, said the government has long been pushing for land acquisition in Mayamuk District, Sorong Regency as a Special Economic Zone.

"Thank God we have good news that the Sorong Regency Government has signed a cooperation agreement with an investment company from China that will enter the Sorong Special Economic Zone. The government has long been pushing for this through the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Pak Luhut and the Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM Pak Bahlil. quite large and very strategic," said Waterpauw.

The Special Economic Zone in Mayamuk District, Sorong Regency has an area of about 523.7 hectares, managed by PT Malamoi Otom Wobok, a regional company owned by the Sorong Regency Government.

Governor Waterpauw said his staff will continue to strengthen the Regency/City Governments in West Papua to open up space for incoming investment because it will encourage regional economic growth and in turn will increase the welfare of the indigenous Papuan people.

One of the facilities in the Sorong area that needs immediate attention, said Waterpauw, is Sorong Port, which is currently experiencing silting.

"I heard that silting occurred at Sorong Harbor. I haven't checked yet, but if this is true, it needs to be addressed immediately," he explained.

In addition, Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD) within the West Papua Provincial Government were also asked to hold activities in various areas such as in Sorong Raya, Fakfak, Kaimana and Manokwari Raya areas.

"We invite all OPD to go down to the regions. Talk about all things there by inviting community leaders, we check and recheck everything, then we formulate the right program to touch our people in the area," said a retired Police officer with the rank of Commissioner General of the Police.

Recently, the President Director of Great United Petroleum Holding Co.Ltd signed a cooperation agreement with PT Malamoi Otom Wobok owned by the Sorong Regency Government and PT Sino Consultans Investman Indonesia (the main consultant for a Chinese company).

The Chinese company plans to invest an initial investment of US$ 50 million or around Rp. 725 billion of the total investment of around Rp. 79 trillion.

The Chinese company plans to enter into several sectors such as port management, smelters and battery factories.

The Sorong Regency Special Economic Zone was built in 2016 and has become one of the national strategic projects.

The main activities carried out in the Special Economic Zone of Sorong Regency to date include the nickel processing industry, the palm oil processing industry, the forest product industry and sago plantations, as well as logistics.

The Sorong Regency Special Economic Zone manager targets that by 2025 the total investment entering the area will reach Rp. 32.2 trillion with a target of absorbing 15,024 workers.
