The expansion of three new provinces in Bumi Cenderawasih is considered to be proof that President Joko Widodo wants to prioritize the welfare of the Papuan people.
"This is proof that for the sake of Papua, President Jokowi wants Papua to continue to experience dynamics, and seeks to stabilize the problems that exist in Papua," said Robi Sugara, a political observer and academic from the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta in a written statement received in Jakarta. , Thursday (4/8).
The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) in June 2022 ratified a bill (RUU) for three new autonomous regions (DOB) in Papua into law, namely the Provinces of South Papua, Central Papua and Papua Mountains. The expansion is intended to guarantee rights and equitable development in Cenderawasih Earth.
Robi said that around 40 percent of Indonesia's problems are in Papua. Therefore, the issue of Papua becomes important and sensitive, so the government is quite careful in responding.
Despite the existence of a moratorium on expansion due to budget constraints, the government is still seeking or prioritizing Papua. Although it requires no small amount of money, the central government is still trying.
"This shows the attention of the central government is quite high, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 wave and the impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine," he said.
The expansion is also to accelerate development and service processes that must be felt by the Papuan people. In addition, what needs to be prioritized is to prepare human resources.
With this, DOB requires sufficient experts. This, of course, has not been fully fulfilled by indigenous Papuans, so it needs support from other Indonesians.
Serious Form
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Papua Indigenous Youth Council, Jan Christian Arebo, assessed that the expansion of the Papua province was in line with the policy of accelerating development in Cenderawasih Earth.
"This is an extraordinary policy as well as a form of seriousness in building the welfare of the Papuan people," he said.
According to him, this expansion is necessary considering the vast geographical conditions of Papua compared to Java, so that the span of control must be widened so that public services can be maximized.
In addition, he said, the three new provinces will also absorb human resources, especially from indigenous Papuans. This of course has a positive impact on the younger generation who have abilities in various fields.
