Inspirational Young Papuans Accompany Eight Corn Farmers Groups to Harvest

Executive Director of Inspiring Young Papua (PMI), Leonardo Aiwoy said eight corn farmer groups in Kwadewar Village will be accompanied until the harvest period and sustainable.

Corn is one of the cheap commodities and does not require special attention. Nationally, Indonesia is experiencing a food crisis which has a direct impact on food security.

In accordance with the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, to strengthen food through corn commodities. This was welcomed by Inspirational Young Papua (PMI).

Leonardo said that in general, people in Papua do not cultivate crops on a large industrial scale, so growing corn is a new thing.

According to him, the main community needs are sago, but in principle sago is not planted but grows by itself.

"But on this industrial scale, we must dare to try. We are doing our best for the community to be a model in other areas," he said in Kwadewar Village, Waibu District, Wednesday (27/7/2022).

In addition to providing seed assistance, there is a technical target that the harvest scheduled for 110 days will only require 90 days using hybrid corn seeds.

He explained that during the harvest period, it will be carried out every month in stages, so that people do not have to wait up to three months.

His party did the land clearing in stages, namely 40 hectares. The main obstacle occurs in the community at the beginning of the month due to cultural and natural conditions where it is not the community's tradition to cultivate crops.

It targets all villages in the Waibu District, namely Kwadewar, Doyo Lama, and Doyo Baru villages, to become pilots.

Leonardo emphasized that the 83.62 hectares of land was not released by indigenous peoples, but PMI only helped so that it could be managed directly.

"We try for each group of 15 people, the enthusiasm of the community is very high. The follow-up will be given to Prospective Farmers and Prospective Locations (CPCL) from the recommendation of the Jayapura Regency government," he said.

So that in the future it will not only provide assistance but also the People's Business Credit (KUR) in which the farmers' banking scheme gets Rp 10 million in the form of goods.

"While the community is waiting, we have prepared heavy equipment so that it can be rented out for people's daily income," he said.

Follow-up programs other than agriculture, namely Integrated Villages, MSME Festival, Fresh Mart, so that development and the economy of the community can be evenly distributed, not only focusing on Jayapura City.

While in the long term it can be used for the Motor Cross Arena other than Tungkuwiri Hill which is a tourist attraction, but Kwadewar Village can be pushed into a Tourism Village.
