YPMAK Consistently Funds Schools for 3,000 Papuan Children Every Year

The Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK) as the manager of the PT Freeport Indonesia partnership fund consistently finances the schooling of 3,000 Papuan children every year.

Director of YPMAK, Vebian Magal said, these 3,000 Papuan children were educated in 21 YPMAK education partners as well as the general public.

"Every year it is consistent, it's 3,000," said Vebian when interviewed in Timika, Tuesday (19/4/2022).

YPMAK always evaluates students who are currently studying, whether they have graduated, returned home due to marriage or illness or died.

Furthermore, Vebian said that every student who completes his education will be replaced with another Papuan child so that the number of children who are financed does not decrease.

If based on the data, for example there are 500 children who return home because they finished school, 500 children will be recruited. Everything is done according to the number of children who complete their education.

"If you do the calculations, for example, last year's 1000 passed, thank God. Indirectly, they open up opportunities for other children,” he said.

To recruit scholarship recipients, announcements are made to children who have just graduated to register.

After registering, these students are selected by partner institutions of higher education such as in Jayapura, Cenderawasih University, USTJ and also high school level schools.

"It was their own selection, for example from Manado, there was Unsrat, they didn't come for the selection, we only facilitated it," he said.

Vebian asserts that the academic ability of each child is crucial.

"If the first stage of academic ability passes, then the next stage is an interview, if it passes and the third stage is health and if all three pass, the briefing will be carried out from the education department and ready to send them," he explained.
