The highest cocoa production coming out of Jayapura Regency once reached 9,400 tons. The production is a collection of cocoa products from Keerom, Sarmi, Jayapura City and Jayapura Regencies, in the period 2007 to 2008.
In the 2010 period, there was a change in climate that had an impact on cocoa plants in Jayapura Regency, both hybrid cocoa and Dutch cocoa, which have been cultivated since 1970.
The climate change brought disaster to the cacao cultivation process, due to the plant's resistance to climate change plus the attack of Vascular Steak Dieback (VSD) pests. Thousands of hectares of cocoa plantations in Jayapura Regency are experiencing stem rot to fruit which eventually dries up.
By utilizing the clonal system and stem entry, a number of villages in the Yapsi District have been turned into cocoa seed gardens covering an area of seven hectares, which is in the process of being developed by the Jayapura District Plantation Service.
The head of the Papuan Cocoa Barricade, Kusnan, said that the local government through the relevant agencies must be sensitive to the cocoa plant development process in Jayapura Regency.
“The impact of climate change on cocoa, which was the fruit season from March to April has changed to May to June. Dutch cocoa is no longer strong enough to produce at this time, it cannot withstand VSD attacks," said Kusnan when met at the Chocolate House, Gunung Merah Sentani Regent's office complex, Wednesday (23/3/2022).
Kusnan said that in the period 2019 to 2021, his party planned a training activity for farmers in Jayapura Regency, with the achievement of a target of 3,500 farmers in the replanting program. The program was submitted to the local government through the relevant agency, but there was no response at all. Whereas Jayapura Regency currently has many advantages in processing, as well as empowering farmers through Macao.
"Nursery gardens and entres as future seedlings already exist, one of which is in Takwa Bangun Village, Yapsi District, has trained field facilitators, and even the government has money for the cocoa program," he explained.
Meanwhile, Ganefo, as the Secretary of the Jayapura Regency Plantation and Livestock Service, admitted that he was completely unaware of the agency's work plans and programs for cocoa development in Jayapura Regency.
“As a secretary with a number of heads of departments within the service, I have never been involved in all planning, programs and activities. While the program is already running, we only accompany it without any explanation from the farmers," he said.
