PT Freeport Indonesia is committed to developing sports in Papua

PT Freeport Indonesia is committed to continuing to develop sports in Papua in order to bring out new talents who are able to compete at national and international levels.

This was conveyed by PT Freeport Indonesia's Director of External Affairs Agung Laksamana during the virtual launch of the Indonesian Basketball Festival in Jakarta, Tuesday.

The Indonesian Basketball Festival is included in the series of events leading up to the FIBA Asia Cup on 12-24 July, with the first series to be held at the Mimika Sport Complex Stadium, Timika, Papua, on 7-11 January.

Agung said that his party is ready to support the event because PT Freeport Indonesia has a commitment to play a role in developing basketball talents, especially in Papua.

“This event is an opportunity to maximize the Mimika Sport Complex Stadium which we built with almost Rp500 billion in funds. So, this facility must be maximized so that there is continuity of sports, and basketball is the first branch to be held," Agung said in a virtual press conference, Tuesday.

Not only basketball, PT Freeport Indonesia also plans to hold similar championships in athletics and football.

“Our next commitment is not only basketball, but also the development of athletics and football. This is significant because many Papuan talents have not been exposed,” said Agung.

"This is the event that is needed to bring out Eastern Indonesian athletes," he added.

He said that the Mimika Sport Complex Stadium which was built by PT Freeport Indonesia was indeed prepared for various sports events, both indoors and outdoors.

He also hopes that the presence of the Indonesian Basketball Festival in Mimika can further promote basketball in Papua

"There are several things that we want to build, namely to build awareness, promote basketball in Papua, and this festival is a place to attract young Papuan talents so that they can take part in basketball, both nationally and internationally," said Agung.

After Mimika, the Indonesian Basketball Festival will stop in four other big cities, namely Bali, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Jakarta.
