The head of the National Police Intelligence and Security Agency (Kabanintelkam), Komjen Pol Paulus Waterpauw, stressed that the implementation of PON XX in Papua must be successful. This four-year sporting event should not be delayed.
"PON is the honor of the state. It must be successful and must not be postponed," said Komjen Waterpauw in Timika City, Mimika Regency, Papua, Thursday (5/8/2021).
This statement responds to the letter from the Mimika Regent Eltinus Omaleng to President Joko Widodo who asked for consideration of the postponement of PON XX due to the increasingly high transmission of Covid-19 cases in the area.
Komjen Pol Waterpauw said that he had met the Regent of Mimika Eltinus Omaleng to discuss the matter. The regent is worried because many residents of Timika and its surroundings have not been vaccinated against Covid-19.
He also asked regional heads to gather community, religious and other leaders who have so far rejected the Covid-19 vaccination program to provide support for the sustainability of PON XX Papua.
"Maybe so far they have not communicated with these figures," he said.
In addition, Papuans, especially those in the four cluster areas that organize PON XX, must prepare themselves to face the Covid-19 outbreak. Protection for them in addition to health protocols, namely vaccination.
"Moreover, as the host, let's support the vaccination program," he said.
