A New History of Connectivity in the Jayapura Sea

Wednesday, January 27, 2021 is a historic day for the Tabi people, especially Jayapura Regency, Papua. Since early morning a number of people have made various preparations. An important momentum will indeed be held that day. Where for the first time the Depapre Container Port is being used.

This is marked by the berth of a ship weighing 3,901 DWT for loading and unloading. The big ship is KM Logistik Nusantara 2 with a capacity of 149.00 TEUs.

KM Logistik Nusantara 2 is a cargo ship serving the sea highway in the easternmost region of Indonesia. The port, which is located in Depapre District, Jayapura Regency, Papua Province, does indeed serve a new sea highway route or route T-9. The route covers Merauke-Kokas-Sorong-Supiori-Depapre Jayapura Regency (round trip / PP).

Depapre Container Port can be visited by large ships. The depth of the beach there reaches more than 50 meters. The port has a multipurpose jetty of 142 m x 25 m and a general cargo warehouse of 40 m x 20 m.

The port is also equipped with two multipurpose fields covering an area of 5,900 m2 and 4,490 m2. Meanwhile, around the port, an eight meter wide road has been built to get in and out of the trailer trucks. However, the road is not yet connected to the Depapre-Sentani road, which is the responsibility of Papua Province.

The Depapre Port was built by the local government. Meanwhile, the management is carried out by the Jayapura Regency Regional Company. The workers are prioritized from the local community.

In the first loading and unloading process, apart from lowering the containers containing the staples, the Lognus 2 ship also raised a container of Robhong Holo bottled drinking water (AMDK) produced by PDAM Jayapura. This mineral water will be marketed to Merauke Regency and other cities where this ship stops, namely Biak, Fakfak and Sorong.

"Today is a very important day in Indonesia's maritime history, because there has been a ship passing from southern Papua to northern Papua and vice versa. This is part of President Jokowi's national strategic program (PSN), namely the new sea highway route. creating connectivity for the Papua region and also reducing price disparities for people in disadvantaged, frontier, outermost and border areas (3TP), "said Expert Staff to the Minister of Transportation Buyung Lalana.

Buyung also hopes that the presence of KM Logistik Nusantara 2, which stops at Depapre Port, can continue to be connected by utilizing air bridges or pioneer flights, and subsidized land transportation through Perum Damri. In the future, it is hoped that these steps can move the wheels of the people's economy and accelerate the national economy.

In line with this, Jayapura Regent Mathius Awoitauw ensured that a number of Regional Apparatus Organizations of the Jayapura Regency Government were preparing commodities and production goods to be marketed via sea tolls. "This pier is what we need so that all community products can be marketed outside Jayapura. Many benefits will be obtained from the presence of the dock, "said Awoitauw

Since its launch in 2015, the maritime highway program has continued to experience improvement and development, both in terms of infrastructure, routes, fleets, total cargo and capacity.

Starting in November 2015 with three routes, in 2017 it has grown to 13 routes. Of the 13 routes, seven of which are implemented by PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (PT Pelni) through assignments and six others are operated privately through an auction mechanism. Until 2020, the maritime highway program has expanded to 26 routes with 100 transit ports.

Meanwhile, until October 2020, more than 50 ports and 294 ships have been built. A total of 293 ships consisting of 116 pioneer ships, 14 container ships, 6 cattle ships, and 18 rede vessels with 2 units used as hospital ships which have been operated and 138 public shipping vessels have been granted to the local government.

As for goods whose transportation costs are subsidized by sea tolls, they consist of basic goods and essential goods. The main goods are agricultural products: rice, soybeans, chilies, shallots; industrial products: sugar, cooking oil, wheat flour; livestock products: eggs, chicken, beef; fresh fish: milkfish, mackerel, tuna / tuna / skipjack. Meanwhile, what is meant by important goods include (1) seeds (rice, corn, soybeans); (2) non-subsidized fertilizer; (3) 3 kg LPG gas; (4) plywood; (5) cement; (6) steel construction; and (7) mild steel.
