although it is confirmed that Jayawijaya will not be one of the areas hosting a number of sports at the XX 2021 National Sports Week (PON), however, the Baliem Valley will still support the implementation of the grand sporting event.
Jayawijaya welcomes PON by preparing a number of tourist attractions, such as mummies, natural caves, Lake Habema and souvenirs.
The Regent of Jayawijaya, Jhon Richard Banua, said that Jayawijaya is a tourist spot so that the government has prepared a number of tourist attractions while maintaining the cleanliness of tourist attractions.
"If there is a PON contingent from outside Papua who wants to visit Wamena, the Regional Government is ready because this is the governor's instructions. We will also try to coordinate with PB PON in the future regarding whether to make souvenirs for visitors or not. So we will prepare for that.
In addition, his party also supports the needs of vegetables during the implementation of PON later from Jayawijaya. However, it all depends on the district head who can coordinate the village head and the community to keep clearing agricultural land. "I will also ask the agriculture agency to review this again, because the need for vegetables is very much needed for PON activities later," he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Jayawijaya Culture and Tourism Office, Alpius Wetipo, said that Jayawijaya tourism promotion is not limited. The uniqueness of existing tourist sites such as mummies, white sand, habema lake, natural caves will still be promoted.
"The uniqueness of tourism in Jayawijaya such as Mummy will raise the curiosity of contingents from outside Papua who want to come to Wamena to see and visit, because PON is also a big event so that from abroad will definitely attend," said Alpius Wetipo.
In addition, the agency will also prepare souvenirs such as Noken, Koteka, Kare-kare, bracelets for tourist visits to this area.
"Will there be any souvenirs from Jayawijaya with the nuances of PON? The service has yet to provide instructions and agreements, but if only for souvenirs from here, there will still be," he said.
Wetipo added that this will continue to be done to boost tourists to Wamena, especially in August there will be a Baliem Valley Cultural Festival (FBLB) plus October 2020 PON.
