The sustainability of Special Autonomy (Otsus) for Papua has received support from various elements of society in the area. The statements of these figures contrast with the various small groups that reject the policy.
The former head of the Papua GKI Synod, Rev. Albert Yoku, said that the mass group that rejected the special autonomy was due to ignorance.
"The factor does not know the implementation of the special autonomy system. Because of that, its legality and truth cannot be accepted by the community," said Pastor Albert in Jayapura City, Papua.
He considered that the church should take an important role in implementing and evaluating the special autonomy. Moreover, the church has been involved in implementing this policy.
Their involvement included recommending members of the Papuan People's Council (MRP) religious representatives mandated by the Special Autonomy Law and Perdasus 4 of 2008.
"The church must also see Otsus as a special blessing from God for indigenous Papuans to be managed and utilized according to the objectives of Otsus," he said.
Otsus has contributed positively to the church and congregation in Papua. Among other things, creating jobs for indigenous Papuans and an increasing number of public officials who are native to the area.
In addition, there was an increase in the acceptance of offerings and tithes. As well as the construction of physical church facilities and infrastructure, church servants' houses and church access.
"So as a former head of the Synod, I admit how positive Otsus is. I always have the principle that the implementation of Otsus is well done, focused and well-directed," he said.
