MUI Supports the Implementation of Safe Pilkada

The West Papua Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) supports the holding of the 2020 Pilkada to run safely and peacefully.

The chairman of the West Papua MUI, Ahmad Nasrau, said the election was one of the country's celebrations that must be held in the midst of a pandemic. For this reason, all parties, from election organizers, participants, political parties to the people in West Papua, are asked to be involved in maintaining the security of the five-year democratic party.

He said, the direct impact of the Pilkada was the birth of political differences. This situation has the potential to cause division and conflict in the community. Therefore, it is hoped that the public and supporters of regional head candidates will not easily believe in false information and news (hoaxes).

"We urge the public not to easily believe in information and news on social media before it is proven," he said.

This time, the Pilkada opportunity should be used and filled with ideas and regional development programs. Thus, the public will be more educated about strengthening healthy and democratic politics.

MUI will issue a public voice as a fatwa for all Muslims so as not to be provoked in the Pilkada. These efforts continue to be made so that the simultaneous regional elections in West Papua on 9 December will run safely and smoothly.

His party also asked Pilkada organizers, namely the KPU and Bawaslu to pay attention to the implementation of health protocols. According to him, in the midst of the current Covid-19 pandemic conditions, compliance in implementing health protocols is an absolute obligation. Therefore, all parties with an interest in the Pilkada must comply with the health protocol regulations.

"Apart from having to be safe, the simultaneous regional elections are also obliged to comply with the prokes for the safety of all citizens," he concluded.
