| Papua Provincial Government Welcomes the Delay of PON 2020 |
Minister of Youth and Sports Zainuddin Amali said the Papua Provincial Government welcomed President Joko Widodo's decision to postpone the National Sports Week or PON 2020 Papua to October 2021. This delay was due to an outbreak of the Corona or Covid-19 virus that attacked Indonesia.
"Earlier, the Governor was not represented by the Deputy Governor. They were very welcoming (the decision)," said Minister of Youth and Sports Zainuddin Amali in the presidency after the meeting with the President via teleconference, Thursday, April 23, 2020.
Zainuddin said on April 7 that Papua Governor Lukas Enembe had asked for directions relating to the implementation of the 2020 PON post-pandemic Covid-19. For one thing, the provincial government there implemented restrictions on entry and exit routes after the first Covid-19 case attacked the area.
"With the Covid-19 pandemic, all concentrations and resources in Papua are directed to the handling of Covid," Zainuddin said.
The restrictions imposed by the Papua Provincial Government have an impact on the preparation for the construction of the ongoing match venue. Many venues have not yet been completed because building materials are no longer available.
In addition, the distribution of materials for development that were imported from outside Papua also experienced obstacles, due to the restrictions on access. "In addition, some of the workers who do work there are also imported from outside Papua," said Zainuddin.
In addition, the procurement of match equipment was also affected. Zainuddin said that producing countries that were expected to be able to supply equipment for PON 2020 were also affected by Covid-19, so the production process was constrained.
"They are experiencing the same conditions so that they are also constrained in production. Not to mention if we talk about the distribution and delivery and various matters that also concern that," said Zainudin Amali.
