90 percent of MSMEs in Jayapura City have increased their business

The Department of Industry, Trade, Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises of Jayapura City, Papua claims that around 90 percent of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) who are assisted have experienced an increase in their business.

"For eight years, we have assisted 6,801 MSMEs. Every year we foster 200 SMEs," said the Head of the Jayapura City Disperindagkop and UKM, Robert LN Awi, at the Jayapura Mayor's Office, Wednesday (2/3/2022).

Awi said, the success of MSME actors who were fostered was due to changing the system, namely from mentoring first and then being given working capital assistance in the form of materials and equipment.

“Previously we provided new mentoring capital, but only 20 people out of 200 people we coach each year are successful. This is very ineffective for the business actors themselves and their businesses," said Awi.

For this reason, by changing the coaching system, every year or from 2015 until now, an average of 90 percent of MSME actors who are fostered experience very significant business development.

“Significant increase means that they are successful [increasing business and smooth bookkeeping]. There is a facilitator for business checks and bookkeeping. At the end of the year, it is evaluated whether the business actors involved are eligible to receive assistance or not, if their business is not serious, we will not include the beneficiaries," said Awi.

Awi hopes that MSME actors (industry, IKM, cooperatives, craftsmen) who are accompanied will continue to stimulate enthusiasm and motivation to work so that there will be an increase in the economy. It can even provide jobs.

“We don't want any more cats in the sacks, but we do make sure that there are cats in the sacks. Assistance is given according to the type of business [in the form of materials and equipment], for example a kiosk business of IDR 5 million, a batik business of IDR 6 million,” said Awi.

Deputy Mayor of Jayapura, Rustan Saru said, the business capital assistance (materials and work equipment) provided by the Jayapura City Government (Pemkot) should be utilized as well as possible so that they become reliable and independent entrepreneurs.

"Don't let it be when you open a business, is there a father or mother who comes to pick up merchandise and continues to be left without having to pay, of course this business will not work. For that, we have to distinguish between business and family," said Rustan.

Rustan hopes that coaching and training will continue to be carried out for MSME actors so that they have competitiveness in doing business so that the economic potential can be managed properly.

“There are many business opportunities that can be managed. For example, opening merchandise in front of the house, if you have a turnover of Rp. 100 thousand every month, if you can get Rp. 3 million every month, it is good enough to add to the needs of the family," said Rustan.
