Papuan youths and students stated that they strongly support the continuation of the Papua special autonomy (Otsus) program. This is because the government program has a very good impact on the continuity of access to education for the next generation of Papua.
One of the Jakarta State University (UNJ) students from Papua, Beto Torabe, said that his presence at a state campus in Jakarta was due to government scholarship assistance from the Papua Special Autonomy program. And he admitted that he was very grateful for that.
“I also received educational scholarships from the government, so I feel grateful to the government for helping me personally to pursue my future. Moreover, my parents are underprivileged, ”said Beto in a press conference in Jakarta, Friday (18/9/2020).
Moreover, said Beto, so far the quality of education in Papua is still lacking as well as access to education assistance to them, so there needs to be seriousness from the government to respond to it.
"Papua's education is still lacking, so it needs to be improved, so that Papuan human resources (human resources) can increase and can compete with other regions," he explained.
Therefore, Beto also stated that he supported the government to continue the Papua special autonomy program. Because with this program, many Papuan children can access assistance in the form of educational scholarships to improve the quality of themselves, especially to prepare for life's challenges.
"So I agree that Otsus should be continued, because it concerns our future as Papuan children who are pursuing education. If Otsus is stopped, what will happen to us, ”he said.
Still on the same occasion, the initiator of Papuan Love Activists, Bio Werfete, also conveyed the same thing. He considered that the development of the quality of Papuan human resources was very important.
"It is better if we help human resource development through scholarship programs which are very important for the young generation of Papua," said Bio.
And he also felt that this step could be taken by providing access to education assistance for them. And Bio also said that the selection of scholarships for students from Papua needs to be continued, one of which is distribution through the Papua Special Autonomy Fund (Otsus).
"The scholarship recruitment process continues through the Papua Special Autonomy budget, and even then it must be fair and in accordance with certain criteria, if necessary it is regulated in a regional regulation," he said.
The same thing was conveyed by a youth from Papua, Jefri Papare. According to him, the selection of educational scholarships for the generation from Papua needs to be done well. Because education must also be based on interests and talents so that young Papuans are able to compete in the world of work later.
"Education in Papua must be based on interests and talents to face employment opportunities, so that they become experts in their fields," he said.
