Papuan PON athletes are in priority for COVID-19 vaccine recipients

The head of the Papua National Sports Week (PB PON) Grand Committee, Yunus Wonda, ensured that athletes and officials at the national quadrennial event would be one of the priority groups of people to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Yunus Wonda, as quoted from the official PON website from Jakarta on Thursday, admitted that his party had a meeting with the Minister of BUMN who is also the Chairperson of the COVID-19 Handling Committee Erick Thohir to ensure vaccine acceptance.

"The COVID-19 vaccine ordered by the Indonesian government will be prioritized for athletes and officials so that when PON all participants are completely protected from the corona virus," said Yunus.

Erick Thohir, said Yunus, also stated that he was ready to support and assist whatever was needed for the implementation of PON Papua which is scheduled for October 2-13, 2021 to be successful.

SOE Minister Erick Thohir previously stated that Indonesia would receive 30 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine by the end of 2020, and 300 million doses for 2021.

The vaccine is the result of cooperation between several pharmaceutical SOEs and foreign pharmaceutical institutions and agencies such as PT Bio Farma (Persero) and Sinovac Biotech from China.

Sinovac has committed to providing 20 million doses of vaccine by the end of this year if the Phase III clinical trial process runs smoothly. Meanwhile, for next year, up to 250 million doses will be produced for Indonesia.

Apart from Biofarma and Sinovac, there is also PT Kimia Farma in collaboration with G42, Genexine, CanSino. In fact, the government is also exploring cooperation with other pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Novafax.
